Cuddle Buddy
John’s favourite jumper, the black and white striped one, had a pleasing texture; soft, but not too soft, Sherlock discovered, like that horrible cardigan that he insisted on wearing. When John was wearing it, he found he could barely resist twitching his fingers at a sleeve, it just felt nice. Then he realised that rubbing at the sleeve when John was actually wearing it, was nicer. The warmth from the doctor’s body relaxed the fibers, and it slid under Sherlock’s palm agreeably. Sherlock pointedly ignored John's bemused stare and began formulating a plan.

So, when Sherlock had asked John for a favour, John had answered no, because promising favours to Sherlock without prior knowledge never ended well. Sherlock had left him alone and returned an hour later. Still no. John was usually good for two no’s before he finally acquiesced, so he gave him half an hour this time.

“How about now?”

“What is it?” John had been snappy. He knew he was up to something, he could just tell.

“I need you to hug me.”
John stared. Of the many things he was expecting him to be up to, that was not one of them, and here he was thinking that nothing could surprise him anymore. He pursed his lips.

“Right. And why?”

Sherlock was across the room in two bounds and was suddenly very close indeed. John practically went through the wall in his attempts to back pedal away from him.

“What the hell are you doing?” he squeaked, not knowing whether to be more embarrassed at the pitch of his voice, or the fact that Sherlock’s hand was making it’s way around his waist.

“Well, it helps me think and I'm having some trouble focusing…”

“Gerroff!” Slapping at hands, he scrabbled away from him to the other end of the couch.

“Please, John! I wouldn’t ask, but it really does help me focus and frankly the patches are not working for me. It’s scientifically proven that human to human contact calms the nerves and heightens awareness.”

“Oh, in that case…. No, still no!”
Sherlock had sulked for days. When he entered the fourth day without showering, John finally acquiesced, if only to get him to wash. It was awkward, they didn’t know who should put what where and Sherlock’s distinctly unfeminine body felt odd tucked up against his own. Sherlock had thanked him calmly in the same tone he used to accept a cup of tea.

“It really does help me think.” His voice was muffled by John’s jumper. There was not a single point in John’s life when he had felt more uncomfortable.

“You never used to hug the skull,” he huffed.

“Of course I didn't. That would be inappropriate. Anyway, Mycroft was always willing….”
John’s definition of inappropriate would never be the same again.

“Sherlock? Is this going to be a regular thing?” He’d been accosted in the hall, shopping bags in hand. It felt different to be standing up, his face pressed into Sherlock’s neck.

“Be quiet, I'm thinking.” He’d felt the vibrations from the taller man’s throat rather than heard it.

“Right. Only, I do have frozen food. Can it wait until I put the shopping away and made some tea?”
Sherlock let out his most weary sigh and let go. “Well, if you must.”

“Yes, I must,” John headed for the kitchen. He’d been putting the teabags in the pot when long arms snaked around his belly and six feet of consulting detective plastered itself to his back. It made getting the milk from the fridge more than awkward.
“Maybe if we were to get you a cuddly toy or something?” he’d suggested as he tried to unplug the steaming kettle without burning himself.

“Do you not like me hugging you?” It was one of those minefield questions that usually ended up in a sulk of massive proportions, no matter how he answered so he deflected it, quite neatly he thought.

“Well, if I’m not here,” he was feeling his way tactfully through, “you could use something else?” To his surprise, Sherlock had agreed.

They’d started with a blanket, but even John had to admit there was something more than faintly ridiculous and slightly obscene about the sight of a grown man hugging a blanket with a look of intense concentration on his face. It lasted two days before Sherlock declared it a failure and the blanket was never seen again. So they moved on to the bog standard teddy bear, a big, fluffy monstrosity that if John had to be honest, would have given him nightmares as a child. He had come home one day to find his service revolver emptied and the bear leaking stuffing from a slew of horrific bullet wounds. So, Plan B was put into action and if John thought that the bear would have given him nightmares, when they opened the package containing the special cuddle pillow from Japan, he’d just about had a coronary.

“Oh for fu…. It’s just an arm and a head.” He didn’t want to touch it.

“Interesting people, the Japanese,” Sherlock took it gingerly out of its box. It was an hour before it went the same way as the bear, and for once, John did nothing to stop it.

“They don't hug back,” Sherlock had explained. “You do.” John wondered when he’d started doing that.

“Not here!” John had hissed. “It’s a crime scene! People will see!”

“Oh, don't be so dull, John.” He grabbed John’s wrist and pulled him close. “It's just so I can focus.”

Donovan nudged Lestrade and nodded towards the edge of the wasteland where Sherlock stood. The top of John's head was all that was visible from under the Belstaff coat.

Lestrade walked over to the pair, his eyebrows almost one with his greying hair.

"What the hell...?"

"Shut up!" Sherlock snapped, wrapping his arms a little tighter around John who peeked out at the detective. "I’m thinking."

Lestrade would have bit back a response if he’d had one.
John was there for ten minutes before Sherlock released him, stalked back over the waiting police and took a deep breath, ready to explain it all. John didn't seem fazed; in fact he was sort of cold now. It had been quite nice under that coat.

“Isn’t it quite distracting?” Mycroft motioned to Sherlock curled up against John’s side. Dark curls were tickling his jaw, framing a face that was now slack with sleep.

“Well, sometimes. Depends what I’m doing really.”
He’d been watching the television when Sherlock had announced he needed to think. John had sighed and sat up holding an arm out, letting Sherlock climb up next to him. “Just be quiet, they’re about to reveal who she’s having an affair with.”

“Oh, it’s her husband’s sister.” Sherlock had sniffed, snuggling up to John’s side, and then had taken him an age to settle down. However, when Mrs. Hudson had let Mycroft in, he’d almost forgotten that Sherlock was even there.

“He used to do that with me,” Mycroft smiled fondly.

“Yes,” John nodded. “We have had that entirely disturbing conversation, thanks.”

“It is a bit… odd, isn’t it?” The words “pot” and “kettle” sprang instantly to John’s mind.

“He says it helps him think, or sleep and sometimes I can get him to eat, even if it is off my plate. And it's not, you know, unpleasant I suppose. He is surprisingly warm and the heating in this place is unpredictable at best.”

“Something unpredictable in Baker Street? How novel.”

A low voice came from John’s collarbone “I heard that.”

When Sherlock appeared at his bedroom door one night, John almost drew the line.

“Oh, Sherlock, no! I'm not...“
Sherlock had mumbled something about not being dull and predictable and crawled under John's covers and settled down.

“I can’t seem to get an insight into the case. You don't mind, do you?”

“It’s a bit late now if I do…” John pinched the bridge of his nose. Something was niggling him. Still, he had to admit it felt quite nice, although a bony shoulder had to be removed from his ribcage before he was comfortable. Sherlock's entire body was taut next to him; sighing, John put his arms around him and rubbed circles on his back. Eventually, he felt Sherlock relax and after a while and he himself started to drift off back to sleep. But…

“Sherlock,” his half awake mind finally latched on to the niggling thing at the back of his mind. “We don’t have a case right now.”
The only answer he got was a gentle snore.

I totally missed this on the kinkmeme, but it's lovely! The part with John and Sherlock hugging by the crime scene is hilarious, and I love this exchange:

“Something unpredictable in Baker Street? How novel.”

A low voice came from John’s collarbone “I heard that.”

The whole thing is so adorable and warming - cuteness in fic form!

Well, thank you for reading and commenting! I'm a big cuddly!Sherlock fan too, even thought he's like the least cuddliest person in the world. I would cuddle John too, or course. A lot. ;D

THIS: He’d been putting the teabags in the pot when long arms snaked around his belly and six feet of consulting detective plastered itself to his back. It made getting the milk from the fridge more than awkward. I have a story.

I have a very close friend who's seven years younger and 28 centimetres taller than me, and he does this whenever he visits and I happen to be in the kitchen. It's a very childlike, sweet thing to do -especially from a love-starved orphan, like my friend. It was cute the first eleven times, until I smashed like two dozens of eggs due to his being glued to my back. Never again, at least not in the kitchen.

This little fic made me smile and giggle because you made it so believable, and it brought back some utterly sweet moments. Thank you :)

Hee! That's a fabulous story. :) I was actually thinking about a little girl who I look after occassionally when I thought of that bit. She hugs *all* the time and once I had to make tea with her plastered around my waist. It made me laugh to think of Sherlock doing that to John, especially with the reverse height difference :)

I'm glad that the fic made you think of nice things :)

I will never tire of fics where

a. Sherlock crawls into John's bed for comfort and John lets him
b. Cuddling is the method of communication Sherlock uses to let John slowly come to terms with the fact that the two of them are basically loves forever.

This is a perfect example of the specimen and makes me utterly happy.

This is both hilarious and endearing, and the ending is brilliant.
